The best electric toothbrushes for gum disease and bleeding gums

For bleeding gums, the Oral-B iO3 (about $110) is our pick: a light tells you when you press too hard, and the small round head cleans the gumline tooth by tooth. On a budget, the Pro 1000 (about $50); if you prefer sonic, the Sonicare 7300 with its Gum Health mode.

Bleeding gums are usually gingivitis: inflammation caused by plaque sitting along the gumline. The good news is that gingivitis reverses when the plaque goes, and powered brushes are measurably better at removing it. The 2014 Cochrane review, which pooled data from 51 of the 56 trials it included, found powered brushes reduced plaque by 21% and gingivitis by 11% compared with manual brushes after three months of use.

Periodontitis is different. Once the gum has pulled away from the tooth and formed pockets, plaque and tartar sit where no brush reaches. That needs professional cleaning, sometimes more. A good brush then becomes the thing that keeps the problem from coming back. Either way, the list below is about the daily part.

Best overall for gum health

Oral-B iO Series 3

Oral-B iO Series 3

  • Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with magnetic iO drive
  • Pressure warningSmart sensor: red when too hard, green when right
  • BatteryAbout 2 weeks
  • HeadsiO heads (Ultimate Clean, Gentle Care, Radiant White)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $110

Oral-B’s oscillating-rotating style is the one with the strongest evidence for reducing gingivitis, and the iO3 is the most comfortable way to get it. The small round head cups each tooth, so it’s easier to reach the gumline at the back of the mouth than with a long sonic head. The light ring matters here too: inflamed gums tempt people to scrub harder, which irritates them more. Green means right, red means stop pushing.

Best on a budget

Oral-B Pro 1000

Oral-B Pro 1000

  • Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with pulsation
  • Pressure warningYes: pulsing stops when you press too hard (no light)
  • BatteryAbout 1 to 2 weeks
  • HeadsClassic Oral-B round heads (CrossAction, Sensitive, 3D White)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $50

Same cleaning style, older motor, much lower price. The Pro 1000 is loud and plain, but it cleans the gumline very well and its heads are the cheapest of any major brand. If cost is what’s stopping you from replacing heads every three months (which matters a lot when your gums are inflamed), this is the answer.

Best for finding the spots you miss

Oral-B iO Series 9

Oral-B iO Series 9

  • Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with magnetic iO drive
  • Pressure warningSmart sensor: red too hard, white too soft, green right
  • BatteryAbout 2 weeks
  • HeadsiO heads

Gum problems are often patchy: fine at the front, bad behind the lower molars or along the inside of the teeth. The iO9’s app tracks which zones you’ve covered, and that’s useful for exactly this. It also has a dedicated gum-care mode. You don’t need the tracking forever. A month of seeing your blind spots tends to fix your routine.

Best Sonicare for gums

Philips Sonicare 7300

Philips Sonicare 7300

  • Cleaning actionSonic, Next-Generation drivetrain (62,000 movements a minute)
  • Pressure warningYes: light ring at the base
  • BatteryUp to 21 days
  • HeadsA3 Premium All-in-One (click-on)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $140

The 7300 has a dedicated Gum Health mode, three intensities, a light ring at the base that lights up when you press too hard, and app coaching that shows which zones you rush. It costs about $140 with three A3 heads and a charging case. If you don’t want the app, the 5900 has a Gum Health mode and a haptic pressure warning for about $90.

Best gentle budget option

Philips Sonicare 4100

Philips Sonicare 4100

  • Cleaning actionSonic (31,000 movements a minute)
  • Pressure warningYes: the handle pulses
  • BatteryUp to 14 days
  • HeadsC2 Optimal Plaque Control (click-on)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $50

When gums are sore, some people simply won’t use a brush that feels harsh. The 4100’s low setting is gentle and it still warns you about pressure. It’s the brush to choose if comfort is the barrier.

If you won't floss

Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0

Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0

  • Cleaning actionSonic brush with built-in water flosser
  • Pressure warningNot stated on listing
  • BatteryCharges in the base
  • HeadsSonic-Fusion flossing heads (compact and full size in the box)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $180

Brushing misses the gaps between teeth, and that’s where a lot of gum disease starts. The Waterpik Sonic-Fusion is a sonic brush with a water flosser built into the head, so you can brush and then flip to flossing without picking up a second device. It’s bulky and needs counter space for the base. If you already use floss or interdental brushes, you don’t need it.

The routine that does more than the brush

Aim at the gumline. Tilt the bristles toward the gum at about 45 degrees and let the brush sit there. Plaque that causes gingivitis lives in the shallow groove where tooth meets gum.

Clean between your teeth once a day. Floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. A brush cleans three of each tooth’s five surfaces; the other two face the neighbours.

Replace the head every three months. Worn, splayed bristles clean the gumline badly. If you’re treating gingivitis, this is the cheapest upgrade you can make.

Expect some bleeding at first. When you start cleaning inflamed gums properly, they often bleed more for a week or so, then less. If bleeding continues past two weeks, or your gums are swollen, receding or tender, book a dental visit.

Do I need the expensive model if my gums are bad?

No. The gap in cleaning between a Pro 1000 and an iO9 is small. What changes outcomes is brushing the gumline every time, cleaning between teeth daily, and getting professional cleanings on schedule. Spend more only if a feature fixes a habit you know you have: the light ring if you scrub, tracking if you rush, a built-in flosser if you never floss.

Signs you need a dentist, not a new brush

  • gums that bleed for more than two weeks despite gentle, thorough brushing
  • teeth that look longer, or gaps that weren’t there before
  • persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • loose teeth or a change in your bite
  • pus or swelling along the gumline

What to change for your own mouth

The setting and the head matter more here than the handle, and some of this a brush cannot fix at all.

What is actually going on in your mouth

A brush canClear the plaque at the gum line that is causing the inflammation, which is what stops the bleeding.

A brush cannotTreat gum disease that has already reached the bone. That needs a dentist.

Setting and headSensitive or Gum Health mode, a soft or gum care head, and no extra pressure. Expect two weeks.

Best for gum disease

A brush canStop the mechanical part of the damage by removing the sideways scrub and warning you about force.

A brush cannotGrow the gum back. Recession does not reverse on its own.

Setting and headA pressure sensor you can see, a soft head, and the gentlest mode. Angle the bristles into the gum line rather than along it.

Best for receding gums

A brush canLet you clean exposed necks of teeth without scrubbing them, and run at a lower power.

A brush cannotSeal the dentine. That is what a sensitivity toothpaste or a dentist does.

Setting and headLowest intensity, a sensitive head, and a fluoride toothpaste for sensitivity. Skip whitening heads.

Start withPhilips Sonicare 5900Price

Best for sensitive teeth

A brush canLift surface stain better than a manual brush, especially with a polishing head.

A brush cannotChange the natural colour underneath. No brush does.

Setting and headA whitening head two or three times a week, a normal head the rest of the time.

Best for whitening

A brush canSlow it down by clearing plaque before it hardens, especially behind the lower front teeth.

A brush cannotRemove tartar once it has set. Only a scale and polish does that.

Setting and headAn oscillating head suits heavy depositors; spend extra seconds on the inside of the lower front teeth.

Dentist recommended

A brush canClean around brackets far faster than a manual brush, which is where decalcification starts.

A brush cannotReach between the wire and the gum. You still need interdental brushes or a water flosser.

Setting and headAn orthodontic head where one exists, a gentle mode, and a slow pass along the bracket line.

Best for braces

A brush canDo the work while you hold the handle still, which is the whole point for a weak or painful grip.

A brush cannotHelp if the handle is thin and slippery. Weight and grip matter more than modes here.

Setting and headA wider handle, a simple button, a stand you can drop it on rather than a cable to line up.

Best for seniors

A brush canClean the margin of a crown or the neck of an implant gently and consistently.

A brush cannotFix a leaking margin or a loose implant. Both are dentist work.

Setting and headSoft or gum care head, gentle mode, and keep abrasive whitening heads away from the margin.

Can I take it abroad, and will it go on a plane?

On a plane yes: a sealed battery inside a brush travels in hand luggage. Abroad, read the base before you plug it in. Sonicare stands and USB-C handles are usually marked 100 to 240V and need only a plug adapter. Oral-B ships region-specific bases, and a US one often reads 110V, which needs a converter or a local base.

What we checkedOral-B’s own support page says its chargers are region specific and lists 110V, 220 to 240V and 100 to 240V bases separately. The number is printed on the underside.

Should I buy now or wait for a sale?

Oral-B and Sonicare handles discount hard and often, so if you are not replacing a dead brush this week, decide the price you will pay and wait for it. Heads almost never discount.

What we checkedThe iO3 is sold on Amazon US as a bundle with two heads and a case, which is why its list price sits higher than older reviews quote.

What a real discount looks like

Odds and ends worth knowing

It can help reverse gingivitis, the early stage, by removing plaque more effectively. It can’t treat periodontitis on its own; that needs professional cleaning below the gumline.
Which is better for gums, Oral-B or Sonicare?

Oral-B’s oscillating-rotating style has the stronger body of evidence for reducing gingivitis, which is why it’s our top pick. Sonicare is a good choice if gentleness is what keeps you brushing.

Should I use an electric toothbrush if my gums bleed?

Yes. Use a soft head, light pressure and the brush’s gentlest mode for the first week or two. Bleeding usually decreases as the inflammation settles.

Is a gum care mode worth it?

It’s a softer, slower pattern meant for massaging the gumline. Pleasant, but not essential. A gentle mode plus good technique does the same job.

How long before gums stop bleeding with an electric toothbrush?

Many people see improvement within one to two weeks of consistent brushing and daily interdental cleaning. If not, see a dentist.
