The best electric toothbrushes for braces
For braces we’d pick the Oral-B iO3 (about $110): its light warns when you press too hard on brackets and its small round head works around each one. On a budget, the Pro 1000; if flossing around wires is the struggle, the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion.

The trouble with braces isn’t the teeth, it’s everything glued to them. Plaque collects above and below each bracket and under the wire, and if it sits there for the year or two of treatment you can end up with white chalky marks (early decalcification) when the brackets come off. Those marks are the thing orthodontists warn every patient about.
An electric brush helps because it does the fast, small movements around brackets that are tedious by hand. But the head shape matters as much as the motor, and no brush gets under the wire well. Plan on a brush plus an interdental tool.

Best overall for braces

Oral-B iO Series 3
- Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with magnetic iO drive
- Pressure warningSmart sensor: red when too hard, green when right
- BatteryAbout 2 weeks
- HeadsiO heads (Ultimate Clean, Gentle Care, Radiant White)
- Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $110
A small round head is easier to steer around individual brackets than a long sonic head, which is why Oral-B brushes are a frequent orthodontist suggestion. The iO3 adds the light ring, and that matters more than you’d think with braces: teenagers in particular push hard trying to clean around metal and end up with sore gums. Use a soft iO head, and tilt it to clean above the brackets, then below them.
Best value for braces

Oral-B Pro 1000
- Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with pulsation
- Pressure warningYes: pulsing stops when you press too hard (no light)
- BatteryAbout 1 to 2 weeks
- HeadsClassic Oral-B round heads (CrossAction, Sensitive, 3D White)
- Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $50
Oral-B sells an orthodontic head (Ortho Care Essentials, sold in some markets; on Amazon US in late October 2026 we only found third-party copies) that fits the Pro 1000 and other classic Oral-B handles, with a mix of shorter and longer bristles meant for brackets. Combined with the brush’s pressure sensor and low price, it’s the most cost-effective braces setup, especially if you’re replacing heads often because brackets wear them out faster.
Best sonic for braces

Philips Sonicare 4100
- Cleaning actionSonic (31,000 movements a minute)
- Pressure warningYes: the handle pulses
- BatteryUp to 14 days
- HeadsC2 Optimal Plaque Control (click-on)
- Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $50
Some people with new braces find a rotating head too much on already sore teeth. The 4100’s gentle sonic motion is easier to tolerate in the first weeks after each adjustment. Its longer head covers several teeth at once, so go slowly and work above and below the wire.
Best two-in-one

Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0
- Cleaning actionSonic brush with built-in water flosser
- Pressure warningNot stated on listing
- BatteryCharges in the base
- HeadsSonic-Fusion flossing heads (compact and full size in the box)
- Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $180
This is a sonic toothbrush with a water flosser built into the head. For braces, the flossing part is the real benefit: a water jet gets under wires and around brackets far more easily than string floss threaded tooth by tooth. If you were going to buy a water flosser anyway, this saves counter space. If you already have one, any brush above will do.
For younger kids in braces

Oral-B iO Kids
- Cleaning actioniO round head, kid tuned
- Pressure warningAutomatic: slows the brush
- BatteryUp to 28 days (Oral-B figure)
- HeadsiO heads (gentle)
- Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $45
Kids in early treatment (often eight to eleven) do better with a smaller handle and a brush that protects them from their own enthusiasm. The iO Kids has an automatic pressure sensor and a music timer. Check that a soft head is fitted, and supervise until they can clean around every bracket on their own.
What to add to the brush
- Interdental brushes (the tiny “Christmas tree” kind): slide them under the wire between brackets. Cheap and very effective.
- A water flosser: the easiest way to clean under wires daily. Countertop models are stronger than cordless ones.
- Fluoride mouthwash or prescription toothpaste: ask your orthodontist. Many recommend extra fluoride during treatment because of the decalcification risk.
Technique with brackets
- Brush the chewing surfaces as normal.
- Angle the head down onto the top edge of the brackets, tooth by tooth.
- Angle it up to clean the bottom edge.
- Then the gumline, then the inner surfaces.
Expect it to take longer than two minutes at first. That’s normal.
What about clear aligners like Invisalign?
With aligners you take the trays out to brush, so any good electric toothbrush works; you don’t need a braces head. Brush before putting trays back in, because anything trapped under them sits against your teeth for hours. Clean the trays separately with cool water and a soft manual brush or a cleaning product made for them. Using a powered brush head on the trays can scratch them and make them cloudy.
Heads for brackets
Small heads reach around brackets better than big ones. Oral-B’s round heads suit braces well, and Oral-B makes ortho heads in some markets; if you can’t find them, a standard CrossAction or Gentle Care head works. On a Sonicare, a standard C2 or a soft gum-care head is fine. Add an interdental (bottle) brush for under the wire, and a single-tuft brush for the bracket edges if your orthodontist recommends one.
Caring for clear aligners
If you wear aligners rather than brackets, brush your teeth before putting the trays back in, every time, or you’ll trap food against your teeth. Clean the trays separately with a soft manual brush and cool water; toothpaste can scratch them and hot water can warp them. An electric brush on your teeth is a good idea, but don’t use it on the trays.
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I stop?
No. Bleeding usually means that edge of gum is inflamed and under-cleaned, and it settles once the plaque at the gum line goes. Give it two weeks of gentle, complete brushing. If it is still bleeding after that, book a dentist rather than buying another brush.
What we checkedSonicare’s Gum Health mode and Oral-B’s Sensitive mode both drop the power rather than change the motion, which is why they feel kinder on a sore gum line.

I have crowns, veneers or implants. Is a powered brush safe?
Yes, with a soft or sensitive head on a gentle setting. What damages dental work is an abrasive whitening head worked hard along the margin, not the motor.
What we checkedWhitening heads carry a polishing cup and stiffer bristles. Sensitive and gum care heads in the same packs do not.

Things readers check with us
Yes, and most orthodontists encourage it. Use a soft or orthodontic head, light pressure and take your time around each bracket.
Will an electric toothbrush damage braces?
Normal use won’t loosen brackets. Pressing very hard or knocking the head into brackets can, so a pressure sensor is helpful.
Oral-B or Sonicare for braces?
Oral-B’s small round head is easier to control around brackets and Oral-B offers an orthodontic head for its classic handles. Sonicare is gentler on sore teeth after adjustments. Both work.
How often should I replace the brush head with braces?
Brackets wear bristles faster, so check every few weeks and replace as soon as they splay, sometimes every six to eight weeks.
Do I still need to floss with braces if I use an electric toothbrush?
Yes. No brush cleans under the wire well. Use floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser daily.
Which brush head is best for braces?
A small, soft head that gets around each bracket: Oral-B’s round heads or a standard Sonicare head. Add an interdental brush for under the wire.
