The hardest part of kids’ brushing isn’t cleaning power. It’s getting two full minutes out of a child who wants to be anywhere else, and getting the back teeth done at all. So the features that matter for kids are different from adult brushes: a timer that feels like a game, a small soft head, a handle sized for small hands, and protection against the kid who presses hard to “make it work.”

We’ve grouped the picks by age, because what works at four is babyish at ten.

Oral-B Kids 3+ Rechargeable

Oral-B Kids 3+ Rechargeable

  • Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating, extra-soft kid head
  • Pressure warningNo
  • BatteryRechargeable; no day figure on the listing
  • HeadsOral-B Kids heads
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $30

Cheap, cheerful and made in every character a preschooler could want. It has an extra-soft round head, a gentle mode for little mouths and a two-minute timer, and Oral-B’s free Disney Magic Timer app turns brushing into a reveal-the-picture game. At this age you’re still doing most of the brushing yourself, so simple is good. One catch: on Amazon US this brush was only offered by a third-party seller when we checked. The Oral-B Kids battery brush (about $17, sold by Amazon, AA battery, replaceable heads) is an easy alternative for a first brush.

Philips Sonicare for Kids (HX6321)

Philips Sonicare for Kids (HX6321)

  • Cleaning actionSonic, kid sized
  • Pressure warningNo
  • BatteryNot stated on listing
  • HeadsSonicare for Kids compact / standard
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $35

The Sonicare for Kids starts on a low-power mode and its Bluetooth app gives rewards for full sessions. Parents tend to like that it ramps up gently, so the buzz isn’t a shock. It’s more expensive than the Oral-B Pro Kids, but if brushing is a nightly fight, the app is the reason to choose it.

About $30 for the Design a Pet edition: two gentle settings, a rubberised compact head, a timer with KidPacer and reusable stickers to decorate the handle. No app, and it charges from USB. A good second brush for a grandparent’s house.

Oral-B iO Kids

Oral-B iO Kids

  • Cleaning actioniO round head, kid tuned
  • Pressure warningAutomatic: slows the brush
  • BatteryUp to 28 days (Oral-B figure)
  • HeadsiO heads (gentle)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $45

Once kids start brushing on their own, pressure becomes the problem. They scrub. The iO Kids has an automatic pressure sensor, a music timer that keeps them going for two minutes and a long-lasting battery, which matters when a charger keeps going missing. It uses the smoother iO motor, so it isn’t as buzzy as older Oral-B brushes. The Stitch edition was about $45 on October 30 with a travel case, and Oral-B rates the battery at up to 28 days.

Ages 12 and up

Teenagers can use an adult brush. We’d start them on the Oral-B iO2 (gentle, simple, auto-slows when pressed too hard) or the Oral-B Pro 1000. If they have braces, read our braces guide.

Toothpaste: less than you think

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the ADA advise fluoride toothpaste from the first tooth:

  • Under 3: a smear the size of a grain of rice
  • Ages 3 to 6: a pea-sized amount

Teach them to spit, not swallow. The usual adult stripe across the bristles is far too much for a small child.

When can kids brush on their own?

Most dentists suggest supervising until around seven or eight, roughly when a child can write their name neatly. Before that, let them have a go, then do a “parent pass” focused on the back molars and gumline. Electric brushes make that pass quicker, which is a decent reason to buy one.

Are electric toothbrushes safe for toddlers?

For under-threes, a soft manual brush is all you need, and it’s easier to control in a tiny mouth. If a toddler loves the idea of a “buzzy brush,” a kids’ model on its gentlest setting is fine with a parent holding it. Kids’ brushes are designed for small mouths; adult brushes aren’t, so don’t hand down your old handle.

Buying on Amazon US: check the seller

When we checked on October 30, 2026, the Oral-B Kids 3+ rechargeable listing we track was only offered by a third-party seller, not Amazon or Oral-B. That can be fine, but warranty claims are simpler when you buy from Amazon or the brand. Oral-B’s Kids battery brush (about $17) and the iO Kids (about $45) were both sold by Amazon.com, as were both Sonicare for Kids models.

Buying for two children

Two kids’ brushes double the head costs, and kids wear heads out faster than adults because they chew and scrub. Kids’ battery brushes are cheapest to run; the iO Kids uses iO heads at about $12.20 each; Sonicare for Kids heads come in compact and standard sizes. Give each child a different colour, or put a sticker on the handle, so heads don’t get swapped.

When to move from a kids’ brush to an adult one

Usually somewhere between 10 and 12, when the child’s mouth is big enough for a standard head and they’re brushing reliably on their own. An adult brush with a soft head and a pressure sensor, such as the iO2 or Sonicare 4100, is a good first step.

Do I need the app and the sensors?

Most people open it for a week. The models that carry an app are worth buying for the extra modes, the charging case and the quieter drive, and you can treat the tracking as a free extra.

What we checkedThe iO9 maps 16 zones and the 7300 tracks brushing too, but both clean with the same heads and the same motors as the cheaper handles in their own ranges.

Which smart features earn their price

I have crowns, veneers or implants. Is a powered brush safe?

Yes, with a soft or sensitive head on a gentle setting. What damages dental work is an abrasive whitening head worked hard along the margin, not the motor.

What we checkedWhitening heads carry a polishing cup and stiffer bristles. Sensitive and gum care heads in the same packs do not.

Asked and answered

Most kids' electric brushes are labelled for ages 3 and up. Below that, use a soft manual brush unless your dentist suggests otherwise.
Is Oral-B or Sonicare better for kids?

Oral-B’s kids range is cheaper and comes in more characters. Sonicare for Kids has a better app and a gentler start. Both work well.

Do kids need a pressure sensor?

From about six, when they brush on their own, it helps. Children often press hard. Younger kids are mostly brushed by a parent, so it matters less.

How often should I replace my child’s brush head?

Every three months, or sooner if it’s chewed or splayed, which with kids is often.

Can my child use my adult electric toothbrush with a kids' head?

Some brands sell kid heads for adult handles, but adult handles are heavy and powerful for small hands. A dedicated kids’ brush is a better fit until about age 12.

Is a battery or rechargeable brush better for a toddler?

A battery brush is fine for a toddler: cheap, light and gentle. Move to a rechargeable once they’re brushing for the full two minutes.
