Oral-B iO3 vs Pro 1000: is the iO worth it?
The Pro 1000 if cost matters most: about $50 for the brush dental offices hand out. The iO3 (about $110 with two heads and a case) if you want a far quieter brush and a pressure light you can see.

If you’ve decided on Oral-B, this is the fork in the road: the classic family or the iO family. They don’t share heads, so the decision lasts as long as you own the brush.

What the iO3 adds
- The magnetic iO motor. Quieter, smoother and less vibration in your hand. This is the difference people notice on day one.
- A visible pressure ring. Green when your pressure is right, red when it’s too much. Much easier to learn from than the Pro 1000’s subtle pause.
- Three labelled modes: Daily Clean, Sensitive and Whitening.
- A neater magnetic charger.
What the Pro 1000 keeps
- Cheaper heads. Classic Oral-B heads cost roughly half as much as iO heads.
- A lower price to start with.
- A very long track record for durability.

Does the iO clean better?
Marginally, if at all. Both use Oral-B’s round-head cleaning, and the Pro 1000 is already among the best-cleaning brushes you can buy. The iO’s advantage is comfort and feedback, which can lead to better brushing habits, and that’s a real benefit, just not a mechanical one.
Noise and feel
The Pro 1000 is an older design: the head oscillates, rotates and pulses toward the tooth, and you hear and feel all of it. Plenty of people like that because it feels like work being done. Others find it rattly. The iO3’s magnetic drive moves the same round head with far less noise and vibration in the handle, and Oral-B adds what it calls micro-vibrations at the bristles. If you gave up on Oral-B because it felt like a power tool, the iO3 is the one to try.
A pause versus a light
The Pro 1000’s pressure sensor stops the pulsing when you push too hard. You’ll notice it if you’re paying attention, and many people aren’t. The iO3 shows red on a ring of light when your pressure is too high and green when it’s right, and it sits where you can see it in the mirror. For anyone with recession or a heavy hand, that visibility is worth more than any extra mode.
Two head families
The Pro 1000 takes classic round Oral-B heads such as CrossAction, Sensitive and 3D White, sold almost everywhere. The iO3 takes iO heads only. On Amazon US on October 30, iO heads were about $10.20 each in a five-pack, while the only genuine classic pack we found was a two-pack at about $12.49 a head; supermarket and warehouse multipacks usually bring classic heads well under that. Our three-year estimates, about $190 for the Pro 1000 and $210 for the iO3, assume Amazon prices. Buy classic heads in bulk and the Pro 1000 pulls further ahead.
Battery and charging
Expect about one to two weeks from the Pro 1000 and about two weeks from the iO3, both charging on a stand. The iO3 bundle includes a travel case; the Pro 1000 single pack doesn’t. Neither has an app.
Buy the iO3 if noise bothers you, if you press too hard, or if you want a brush that feels premium every morning. Buy the Pro 1000 if you want the lowest total cost, or you already have a drawer of classic heads.
Which one fits you
You’ve used an older Oral-B and found it harsh or loud: the iO3. The quieter magnetic drive is the whole reason to pay more.
You want a pressure warning you’ll notice: the iO3’s light ring. The Pro 1000 only stops pulsing, which is easy to miss.
You want the lowest price today: the Pro 1000, about $50 against about $110 for the iO3 Limited bundle on October 30. That bundle does include two spare heads and a travel case.
You share a bathroom with other Oral-B users: check which handles they have. iO heads only fit iO handles, and classic heads only fit classic ones.
Will it wake the person still asleep?
A classic geared Oral-B is the loudest brush here and it rattles through a wall. An iO or any sonic handle is a hum you can brush next to someone with.
What we checkedThe iO range swapped gears for a magnetic drive, which is the single biggest change in noise between Oral-B handles.

I already have heads. Will they fit a new handle?
Only inside the same family. Oral-B iO heads fit iO handles and nothing else, classic round heads fit every Oral-B that is not an iO, and any modern click-on Sonicare head fits any modern Sonicare handle.
What we checkedWe mapped every handle on this site to its head family and the price of a genuine pack.

The questions that come up
It’s quieter, smoother and has a better pressure warning. Cleaning is similar. The Pro 1000 is cheaper to buy and run.
Can I use Pro 1000 heads on the iO3?
No. iO handles only accept iO heads.
Which lasts longer per charge?
The iO3, at about two weeks, generally outlasts the Pro 1000.
Is the iO3 worth $60 more than the Pro 1000?
If the Pro 1000’s noise bothers you, or you need a visible pressure warning, yes. If neither applies, the Pro 1000 cleans almost as well and costs less to run.
Which is better for receding gums?
The iO3. Its light ring makes pressure visible, and pressure is the habit that matters most for recession.
