The best electric toothbrushes for whitening

No brush changes your natural shade, but the right one lifts coffee and tea stains far better than a manual brush. Our pick is the Oral-B iO5 (about $120) with its Whiten mode; for sensitive teeth, the Sonicare 5900; on a budget, the Pro 1000 with a polishing head.

Let’s get the disappointing part out of the way. Tooth colour comes from two places: stains sitting on the enamel surface (coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, curry), and the natural shade of the tooth underneath. A toothbrush can only touch the first one. If your teeth are evenly yellowish all over, that’s mostly intrinsic colour, and only peroxide-based whitening changes it.

Surface stains are a different story. Powered brushes remove them noticeably better than manual brushes, and the effect shows up within a few weeks. So the question this page answers is narrower: which brush, with which head, gets coffee stains off best without wearing your enamel?

Best overall for stain removal

Oral-B iO Series 5

Oral-B iO Series 5

  • Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with magnetic iO drive
  • Pressure warningSmart sensor: warns of too much and too little pressure
  • BatteryAbout 2 weeks
  • HeadsiO heads
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $120

The iO5 is the cheapest iO with a dedicated Whitening mode alongside Intense and Sensitive. Oral-B’s round head works tooth by tooth, which is good for the stubborn stains that build up between teeth and along the gumline. Fit an iO Radiant White head for the polishing bristles. The app’s coverage tracking also helps here, since stains tend to collect on the teeth you rush.

Best gentle whitening

Philips Sonicare 5900

Philips Sonicare 5900

  • Cleaning actionSonic, Next-Generation drivetrain
  • Pressure warningYes: haptic buzz when you press too hard
  • BatteryUp to 21 days
  • HeadsC3 Two-in-one (click-on)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $90

Sonic brushes polish well with a whitening head and are kinder to sensitive teeth. The 5900 gives you three intensities, so you can use a stronger setting on the front teeth where staining shows. Sonicare’s W-series heads use a denser centre of bristles for polishing.

Premium pick

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige

  • Cleaning actionSonic with SenseIQ adaptive power
  • Pressure warningYes: light ring, and SenseIQ turns the power down
  • BatteryUp to 14 days
  • HeadsA3 Premium All-in-One
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $380

The A3 Premium All-in-One head that comes with the Prestige is designed for plaque, gums and stains in one, so you don’t swap heads. Philips claims strong stain-removal results for it. It’s a lot of money for whitening alone, but if you’re buying a top-end Sonicare anyway, it does this well.

Best budget whitening setup

Oral-B Pro 1000

Oral-B Pro 1000

  • Cleaning actionOscillating-rotating with pulsation
  • Pressure warningYes: pulsing stops when you press too hard (no light)
  • BatteryAbout 1 to 2 weeks
  • HeadsClassic Oral-B round heads (CrossAction, Sensitive, 3D White)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $50

Pair the Pro 1000 with Oral-B’s 3D White heads, which have a polishing cup in the centre. It’s the cheapest effective stain-removal combination we know of, and classic Oral-B whitening heads are inexpensive to replace.

Cheapest with lots of heads

Aquasonic Black Series

Aquasonic Black Series

  • Cleaning actionSonic (40,000 vibrations a minute)
  • Pressure warningNo
  • BatteryAbout 4 weeks
  • HeadsAquasonic DuPont heads (8 in the box)
  • Amazon price, Oct 30, 2026about $40

Aquasonic sells this one on whitening, and its four modes include a whitening setting. It’s no stronger at stain removal than the others here, but $40 for a brush plus eight heads is a lot of polishing for the money. No pressure sensor, so go gently.

What a whitening mode actually does

On most brushes, “whitening” mode is a different motion pattern: Oral-B’s usually adds speed variation, and Sonicare’s typically spends extra time at the end on the front teeth. It doesn’t add chemistry. The head and the toothpaste do more than the mode.

Heads that help (and one that hurts)

  • Oral-B: 3D White (classic handles), Radiant White (iO handles).
  • Sonicare: W2 Optimal White or W DiamondClean for most handles; A3 Premium on top models.
  • Avoid using a whitening head every day if you have recession or sensitivity. The polishing elements are firmer.

Toothpaste matters more than you think

A whitening toothpaste with mild polishing agents helps lift stains. Avoid very abrasive pastes and charcoal powders, which can wear enamel over time and make teeth look more yellow as the dentin shows through. If you want a real shade change, talk to your dentist about professional whitening or use an ADA-accepted peroxide product.

Why are my teeth still yellow after weeks of brushing?

Because the colour is in the tooth, not on it. If stains have gone but the overall shade hasn’t changed, you’ve reached the limit of what brushing can do. That’s the point where whitening strips or a dentist-supervised treatment makes sense.

A realistic timeline

Surface stains from coffee, tea and red wine start to lift within a week or two of switching to an electric brush with a polishing head. After about a month you’ll see most of what brushing can do. If your teeth are still darker than you’d like, that’s their natural shade, and only whitening treatments change it. Ask your dentist which ones are safe for you, especially if your teeth are sensitive.

Whitening toothpaste and enamel

Whitening toothpastes remove stains mostly by being more abrasive. Used with a polishing head and a whitening mode, that’s a lot of scrubbing, so if your teeth are sensitive or your enamel is thin, pick one or the other. A regular fluoride toothpaste with a good electric brush removes most everyday stains on its own.

Will it actually whiten my teeth?

It lifts surface stain from coffee, tea and tobacco, and that often reads as whiter. It cannot change the colour of the tooth underneath, and no brush can.

What we checkedWhitening modes on these handles change speed and add a polishing cup. None of them carry peroxide, which is what changes the shade.

What stain removal can do

Can I take it abroad, and will it go on a plane?

On a plane yes: a sealed battery inside a brush travels in hand luggage. Abroad, read the base before you plug it in. Sonicare stands and USB-C handles are usually marked 100 to 240V and need only a plug adapter. Oral-B ships region-specific bases, and a US one often reads 110V, which needs a converter or a local base.

What we checkedOral-B’s own support page says its chargers are region specific and lists 110V, 220 to 240V and 100 to 240V bases separately. The number is printed on the underside.

Brushes built for a bag

Odds and ends worth knowing

An electric brush with a polishing head: the Oral-B iO5 with a Radiant White head, or a Sonicare 5900 with a W-series head. They remove surface stains well. No brush changes your natural tooth shade.
Do electric toothbrushes whiten teeth?

They remove surface stains better than manual brushes, which makes teeth look brighter. They don’t bleach.

Is whitening mode bad for your teeth?

Not on its own. Whitening heads and abrasive pastes used with heavy pressure can wear enamel and gums, so stay gentle.

How long does an electric toothbrush take to remove stains?

Most people notice a difference in two to four weeks of twice-daily brushing.
